The Attitude of Gratitude Series: Shifting Our Focus, Transforming Our Hearts
Life can be messy, overwhelming, and downright hard. And when things don’t go the way we hoped, our default response is often to grumble or focus on what’s going wrong. But what if we could change that? What if we could shift our perspective to focus on God’s goodness—even when life feels far from good?
That’s exactly what we’ve been unpacking in The Attitude of Gratitude series in our online Bible study. Each week, we’ve dug into God’s Word to explore how complaining, lamenting, and attitude impact our gratitude. As we prepare to conclude the series next week with a powerful lesson on gratitude, let’s take a moment to reflect on what we’ve learned so far.
---
Lesson 1: Complaining and Its Consequences
We started our series by addressing something we all struggle with—complaining. Let’s be honest, grumbling feels good in the moment. But as we saw in Numbers 11, when the Israelites complained in the wilderness, it led them further from God’s blessings, not closer to them. Complaints focus on what we don’t have and ultimately reveal a lack of trust in God’s plan.
Instead of letting complaints take over, we were challenged to stop and consider: What do my words reveal about my heart? Learning to replace complaints with thankfulness is the first step in shifting from negativity to gratitude.
---
Lesson 2: The Purpose of Lamenting
In Week 2, we tackled the topic of lamenting—a concept that’s often misunderstood. Lamenting isn’t the same as complaining; it’s an honest cry to God when we’re hurting or confused. We looked at examples from the Psalms, where David poured out his heart to God, not in rebellion, but in trust.
Lamenting acknowledges our pain while also declaring our confidence in God’s faithfulness. It reminds us that even in our darkest moments, God hears us, and He cares. We don’t have to hide our struggles from Him. Instead, we can bring them to the throne of grace and find peace in His presence.

Lesson 3: Choosing a Positive Attitude in a Negative World
Last week, we dove into the topic of attitude and how it shapes the way we experience life. We live in a world where negativity runs rampant, but as believers, we’re called to rise above it. Philippians 4:8 challenged us to focus on things that are true, honorable, just, and praiseworthy.
We also talked about how science and Scripture agree—keeping a positive attitude isn’t just good for the soul; it’s good for your mind and body too. Gratitude rewires your brain to focus on joy and peace, even when circumstances don’t change. By taking every thought captive and anchoring our attitudes in Christ, we can find strength to face whatever comes our way.

Next week, we’re concluding the series with a live discussion on “Gratitude, Thanksgiving, and Praise.” This lesson will focus on the heart of the matter—learning to count our blessings daily, even when life feels uncertain.
We’ll talk about:
Practicing gratitude as a daily habit
Offering praise in every season of life
Recognizing and celebrating God’s faithfulness in the small and big things
This final lesson will be a beautiful reminder that gratitude is the gateway to joy, peace, and a deeper relationship with God.
